Hanna Hänström
Associate, Antitrust
"I was set on becoming an economist, but eventually realised law was my true path. With a strong interest in both fields, antitrust felt like the perfect combination. My background in economics has been valuable for understanding competition theories of harm, which are essential in antitrust cases. Since starting my career, I have continued to enjoy both the economic elements and the challenging, dynamic nature of antitrust. You will never be bored with antitrust! "
I joined Clifford Chance in July 2024, after completing a one-month internship with the team in the summer of 2023. My educational background is primarily from Sweden, where I completed my Master of Laws. During my studies, I worked at a couple of law firms in Sweden and went on an exchange semester. These experiences solidified my aspirations for living abroad and working at a law firm. Having had a great experience during my internship at Clifford Chance, it was easy to choose the firm to start my legal career.
What led you to specialise in your practice area and what keeps you passionate?
Before I started studying law, my mind was set on becoming an economist. I even started a bachelor's degree in economics. But eventually, I realised law was the path I truly wanted to pursue. With a strong interest in both economics and law, antitrust was a perfect combination of the two fields. Since starting my career in antitrust, I still very much enjoy the elements of economics and also the challenging and dynamic nature of this area of law. You will never be bored with antitrust!
How did your initial assumptions about being a lawyer change as your career progressed?
I expected the work of a junior lawyer to be quite monotonous. This has proven to be far from the truth, and I would instead describe the work as varied.
How would you describe the culture at the firm?
The culture at Clifford Chance is very open - everyone's opinions are valued, and colleagues are approachable and happy to help. I find my colleagues to be extremely friendly, not just in the Brussels office but globally. This supportive and inclusive environment fosters collaboration and ensures that no matter where you are, you feel part of a cohesive team. As for the Brussels office, I enjoy that it has a familiar and welcoming atmosphere. Despite being a relatively small team, we work on high-profile matters for major international clients.
What key skills have you developed so far?
During this first year at Clifford Chance, I have deepened my understanding of competition law, which has given me a solid foundation to tackle complex legal issues effectively. I have also learned how to deliver under time pressure while maintaining attention to detail and sharpened my decision-making skills. All these skills are crucial for succeeding as a lawyer.
What aspect of the work brings you the greatest satisfaction?
I enjoy being surrounded by smart and knowledgeable colleagues who inspire and challenge me to constantly become a better lawyer. I also enjoy getting to know people globally and having fun while working on complex legal issues.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career at Clifford Chance?
Try to attend events that Clifford Chance organises and talk to as many people as possible! This gives both you and the firm an opportunity to get to know each other. It is important to determine not only if you are a good fit for the company, but also if the company is a good fit for you.
What has been your most exciting project so far?
I recently worked on a merger for a client that required us to really delve into the client's products and market. The exercise was challenging, but it made the outcome even more rewarding when we succeeded!
What is the best career advice you have received?
Focus on what you excel at, as it often aligns with what you enjoy and where you will succeed. During my studies, I was interested in many areas of law, and this advice helped me narrow down my career path after graduating.
How do you maintain a work-life balance?
The dynamic nature of work in a law firm makes the environment engaging and rewarding. Each phase presents valuable opportunities to focus, grow, and deliver exceptional results. Whenever you have some time at hand, it is important to appreciate and make the most of that time.
