Singapore

A bright start to a career in Singapore

In 2012, Clifford Chance Pte Ltd and Cavenagh Law LLP registered as a Formal Law Alliance in Singapore under the name Clifford Chance Asia. The Formal Law Alliance allows the two firms to provide the broadest range of Singapore and international law services from one platform, with Singapore litigation representation provided through Cavenagh Law.

Whether you're applying for a Summer Internship or a Practice Training Contract, this provides you with a unique opportunity that few firms in Singapore can offer.

The Training Programme

This unique programme is 26 months in duration, and will first provide a Practice Training Contract through Cavenagh Law LLP. Following your admission to the Singapore Bar, you will then undergo the Post-Qualification Training Programme conducted by Clifford Chance.

Over the course of this programme you will undertake four rotations which include a combination of seats in our practice areas of Corporate, International Arbitration & Dispute Resolution and Global Financial Markets. In addition to this, one of your seats will be an international secondment, allowing you to gain real insight into how our cross-border collaboration contributes to our success.

From the moment you start, you'll receive tremendous support from the HR team, partners, and supervisors, who have been through the process themselves because we recognise that quality training and supervision are the key to getting the most from your training period.

Summer Internships

A summer internship is the perfect way to learn about working at Clifford Chance and meet our people. This opportunity not only allows you to gain work experience in a first-class working environment, it is often the first step in your career path as a lawyer.

We run two summer internship programmes annually across June and July. During the four-week programme you will follow the life of a lawyer at Clifford Chance closely – you will sit in two different practice areas, working with our lawyers on real, live client projects. You will be treated as a part of our team and given opportunities to demonstrate your ability.

The programme is designed for us to see the best of your ability. In order to do this, you will be assigned a mentor, an experienced lawyer one or two years ahead of you, who will help you settle in and who will answer any questions you might have. We will also host sessions from professionals across the firm to give you a real insight into how our firm works. As a part of the programme, you will also have the opportunity to interview for a Practice Training Contract with Cavenagh Law LLP to commence after you graduate.

Benefits

  • $1,800 salary for the four-week scheme
  • Socials events and activities throughout the scheme

We are no longer accepting applications for our 2024 Summer Internship Program. Applications for our 2025 Summer Internship Program will open on 2 September 2024.

What we look for

You will need to exhibit ambition, drive and commitment, the ability to articulate ideas clearly, and the desire to build relationships and deliver outstanding service. We're also looking for business awareness, a keen commercial insight and a strong ability to lead and manage.

Successful candidates also demonstrate intellectual curiosity, common sense, strong interpersonal skills, an interest in business and the capacity to assimilate detailed information quickly.

These are the qualities that will determine your future with us. Above all, we are looking for people who do not settle for second best in what they want to achieve and where they choose to work. When completing your application consider how you can best demonstrate these qualities and try to provide examples from your academic life, work experience or other activities.

Application process

The first stage of the application process is an online application form. If you are successful at this stage, you will be invited to take part in a video-recorded interview. For summer internships, the final stage of our selection process is a face-to-face interview with an associate, partner, or member of our graduate recruitment team. This interview allows us to understand your background, interests and commercial awareness. If you are successful after the interview, you will be offered a position on our summer internship programme. If you are applying for a Practice Training Contract there will be an additional commercial exercise assessment to complete after the face-to-face interview.

ELEVATE Programme

Our goal is to deliver equality of opportunity, equality of aspiration and equality of experience to everyone and we aim to do this through the ELEVATE programme in Singapore.

What is ELEVATE?

ELEVATE is a 6-month programme that offers eligible students support to embark on successful legal careers in Singapore. The programme is open to law students who are bursary recipients at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Singapore Management University (SMU). We're delighted to have also contributed to the general bursary funds at both universities to support the next generation of aspiring lawyers.

As an ELEVATE student, you will be provided with professional development opportunities and access to mentorship from our experienced team of Clifford Chance lawyers and business professionals. The ELEVATE programme is designed to give you the skills and confidence to be successful in your legal careers wherever your career takes you.

ELEVATE students in the second year of their law degree will also be invited to interview for our Internship Programme, which further prepares students for our Training Programme.
