Aaran Scott

Director of Legal Project Management

"I enjoy and find the work at Clifford Chance challenging and varied every day. I also appreciate the fact that Clifford Chance is a very people-orientated firm."

I was one of the original Legal Project Management (LPM) hires in 2016. It has been a great privilege to have been given the opportunity to professionally develop extensively in that time. Our LPM team works with our partners, lawyers, and clients to scope, plan and deliver complex legal transactions. My role also includes the responsibility and oversight of our Legal Project Management function across the 14 offices our teams are based, from London to Sydney. Prior to joining Clifford Chance, I worked in financial services for 10+ years in a range of operational and commercial management roles.

Throughout my career, I have always sought to work and test myself alongside the best people in the most challenging environments, and I feel it doesn't come better than Clifford Chance and the work we do for our clients.

How is LPM evolving and growing?

We were one of the first movers back in 2016, but now many of our competitors have also established LPM teams. As a result, we've continually adapted to stay ahead of the market. At first, we started with three people in London, but based on demand we now have team members across 14 different offices, which enables us to support more partners, more clients, and more work year-on-year.

Our evolution is not just about growth, we are also investing time in improving our processes and technology. To ensure we remain at the very pinnacle of efficiency for the firm and our clients.

My most rewarding experience

I very much enjoy working with our teams and seeing them succeed in their roles supporting our Partners and clients, it's really pleasing to hear feedback from partners and clients.

I was also particularly delighted and proud to see the team's achievements recognised with an award at the IILPM 2022 awards.

My advice for anyone wanting to join the LPM team?

My advice to anyone considering an LPM career at the firm, make sure you're proactive, persistent , and focused on people, a mixture of these skills will help get you started at Clifford Chance, and the rest we can help you with.

What I enjoy most about my work

I am privileged and thoroughly enjoy the opportunity the firm's provided me, to help influence how we enhance the way we deliver complex work for our clients, not from a legal standpoint but from a project and operational management perspective. The firm does some of the best work in the market, for the best clients and so playing a small part in that is very rewarding.

What does a day in your role look like?

In one word "varied" – but normally I start the day by taking my son to nursery, where we talk about what superhero he plans to be that day before I jump on a train to London or straight on to an MS Teams call.

I normally have a hectic schedule between meetings, project work, and outstanding actions due, and one of the benefits of having a global team is they have different cultures and ways of working which creates even more variety. Sometimes I may start with an early morning call with a colleague in Singapore and on other days once the kids are in bed, I may end the day with a call with a team member in New York.

But to ensure I remain on top of things I spend 30mins every-day planning for my next day, so I am well prepared ahead of time. I am also a big advocate of taking a lunch break, and in my break, I will try to run 5k (most days, not all) as I find it helps clear my mind and enables me to focus more for the rest of the day.
