Frankfurt Summer Program

Our Frankfurt 1L summer program, which we have successfully run since the summer of 2014, is designed to provide 1L summer law clerks with an opportunity to work in a capital markets team focused on cross-border transactions and experience life in a large international law firm. Due to the nature of our practice, our summer program is based primarily on Capital Markets securities work (with a focus on US securities). We are dedicated to providing 1L summer law clerks an in-depth and interactive view of our practice.

The Frankfurt program runs parallel to our summer programs in New York, Houston, Washington, DC, London and Hong Kong. We schedule a full calendar of organized trainings and networking opportunities.

The experience

1L summer law clerks will work closely with our Frankfurt Capital Markets team. The work is generally billable, providing the opportunity to see what life as a leading international capital markets lawyer is like. The program also includes social events hosted both in and outside the office which provides a great opportunity to get to know the US team and the wider firm, as well as Frankfurt itself.

The work

Our capital markets practice in Frankfurt advises a wide range of clients from global investment banks, top-tier private equity sponsors, major corporates, sovereigns and others on a wide range of transactional work related to securities, public M&A, restructuring, corporate governance advice, and covers a wide geography from Western and Eastern Europe to the Middle East, and Africa. We have a broad market-leading practice that is primarily focused on:

Fachliche Einführungs- und Vertiefungskurse

We advise on large and mid-sized IPOs and secondary offerings, capital increases, equity-linked instruments, with a particular emphasis on European and US listings. Clifford Chance's ECM practice is top ranked both in Europe and globally.

We advise across the DCM spectrum, including investment grade and sovereign issuances as well as leveraged finance, and high-yield work, addressed both to the US market and international markets. We are top-ranked in DCM in Europe and globally.

Our team in Frankfurt routinely advises on capital-markets related work such as public M&A and tender offers, restructuring, corporate governance and compliance matters for listed companies.

The details

We typically seek two 1L summer law clerks each year and our program runs parallel to the New York, Houston, Washington, DC, London and Hong Kong summer programs, from mid-May to the end of July. While German language capabilities are a plus, they are not a pre-requisite to be selected. The Frankfurt 1L summer law clerk position also provides a great opportunity to connect and network with our US offices and pursue the path to a 2L summer in one of our US offices. Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate split-summers and require a 10-week commitment.

The requirements

1L applications are now closed. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in an ABA-accredited law school, with an anticipated graduation in Spring 2027. Complete applications must include a resume, law school transcript (an unofficial copy is acceptable) and a personal statement outlining why you are interested in joining our Frankfurt team this summer (max 500 words). Only complete applications will be considered.
