The work
I knew the firm and had done a secondment in the Corporate team before joining. The Africa practice is what really attracted me to the firm - it is big and very busy. Many of our clients are very active in Africa, across a variety of sectors and, through advising them over a long period of time, we have built a really strong network of people across the firm with unparalleled Africa expertise.
The work I do is truly international, which is a real pull for me. While a lot of my work is focused on Africa, I also do deals in Europe, Asia and Latin America. I have worked on a range of transactions in general M&A, PE and TMT. I really enjoy the work and the diversity of the deals, clients and colleagues here. No day is the same as the next and it is never boring. It cuts across different sectors and geographies, and I am always learning about new and innovative ideas.
Technology is one of the key drivers of growth in Africa. The impact that mobile technology is having on the continent is immense – it impacts businesses, health, and improves the quality of lives, growing a middle class, increasing spending power and ultimately improving the economy.
Working in TMT allows me to be part of this exciting growth story. It is also very important to me that the work I do contributes to making a difference to people's lives in the markets we advise in. A key part of my work, which I find very fulfilling, involves advising our PE clients when they inject growth capital into businesses in emerging markets. Working in emerging sectors and in emerging markets is also very interesting as it often involves doing cutting-edge work and creating solutions that have never been tried before, which is very exciting.
I am heavily involved in pitch meetings and do quite a lot of business development. The firm offers excellent opportunities to be involved in pro bono, community initiatives and other exciting high-profile activities.
