Isabelle Cameron

Senior Associate, Corporate

"I have worked in three Clifford Chance offices – Sydney, Hong Kong and London. What initially drew me to Clifford Chance was its reputation as a leading global firm, which has only been reinforced throughout my career."

What is your current role at Clifford Chance, and what type of work do you focus on?

I am a Senior Associate in the Private Equity team, in the London office. Our group is the market leading practice in private equity, advising on all aspects of the private equity life cycle from fund formation, capital deployment, debt and equity financing, M&A, public to privates, growth and restructurings to exits.

We are organised under four key pillars – developed markets (which includes real estate and secondaries), infrastructure, renewable energy and emerging markets. My practice is a combination of infrastructure and developed market private equity.

What is one of the most fulfilling aspects of your work at Clifford Chance?

Working alongside our clients to achieve their goals is incredibly rewarding. At Clifford Chance, I have contributed to landmark deals, including an APAC country's first SPAC merger deal and investments in globally significant assets. Our clients, leaders in their fields, seek our innovative, highly strategic and commercially sound advice.

What professional development opportunities have you found at Clifford Chance that have helped you grow since joining the firm?

I have been lucky enough to work in three Clifford Chance offices – Sydney, Hong Kong and London. What initially drew me to Clifford Chance was its reputation as a leading global firm, which has only been reinforced throughout my career. The firm's commitment to creating a strong international network and a unified global team has given me exposure to diverse clientele, industry knowledge, and products across jurisdictions. It has also allowed me to form invaluable mentorships and friendships with colleagues globally, enabling me to reach out to friendly colleagues in Tokyo, Brussels or New York!

What role has mentorship played in your development at Clifford Chance?

I can confidently say that I would not be half the lawyer I am today if it weren't for my mentors at the firm. A great mentor will encourage you to be invested in your work, develop relationships with clients and colleagues, and take advantage of career opportunities, such as driving diversity and inclusion initiatives or contributing to thought leadership.

Throughout my career, I have sought mentors who have a strong work ethic, are authentic and passionate about their work. I am grateful for the guidance and support I have received from my mentors in the firm, and I hope to pay it forward by mentoring others.

What collaborative practices at Clifford Chance have positively impacted your ability to develop new skills or enhance your expertise?

As a Trainee, I became a founding member and a member of the steering committee of our global gender parity group, Accelerate>>> in Australia. The group is committed to taking bold actions to drive the pace of change towards gender equality. My role in this network allowed me to take on greater responsibility at a junior level while fostering key relationships with clients who shared the firm's vision for a diverse and inclusive workplace.

Can you share an example of a time when collaboration at Clifford Chance led to a successful outcome on a project or deal?

I am fortunate to work on cross-practice and cross-border deals in Private Equity, where our team frequently collaborates with colleagues in other practice areas and offices. One memorable example is when I was a Trainee in Corporate, working on a global pharmaceutical company reorganisation impacting its business operations in roughly 20 jurisdictions. Clifford Chance was chosen by the client for its unmatched breadth and expertise in handling such complex work. The cooperation across offices and time zones was seamless, thanks to open communication and uncompromising excellence.

In what ways have you been able to contribute to the mentorship and development of more junior lawyers at Clifford Chance?

As a Senior Associate, I am a supervisor to Trainees within Private Equity. This role has allowed me to enhance junior team members' understanding of the law and professional skills. It's been a fulfilling experience to see them grow and progress in their careers.

I also prioritise building an inclusive workplace where diverse talents are recognised and supported, which is why I have been actively involved with Accelerate>>>. Contributing to a diversity of perspectives and voices at Clifford Chance through mentorship has been incredibly rewarding.

Lastly, I have participated in the reverse mentorship program, mentoring a senior male partner in Sydney on gender diversity, helping shape the firm's 'top-down' culture for junior lawyers.

What advice would you give to junior lawyers about specialisation and gaining experience in different areas?

Take advantage of the endless professional opportunities the firm offers. Use your time during your Training Contract to discover and "practice" your passion. Once you understand what you love, you can work on making it your career.
