Tell us about your career journey to date

I began my career in finance, training as a Chartered Accountant at a Big-4 firm. I then specialised as a Forensic Accountant for the government, and later for the FCA, which allowed me to work across multiple criminal and regulatory cases, where I found myself increasingly fascinated by the legal complexities in my work. It was during this time that I realised my passion extended beyond the numbers - I wanted to be part of the legal solutions that shape business outcomes, informing my decision to pursue commercial law.

Which transferable skills have you gained that will enhance your ability to thrive in your legal career?

There are so many transferrable skills between finance and commercial law. The ability to quickly interpret complex information and communicate it to stakeholders in a seamless way is fundamental for both a great accountant and a great lawyer. Additionally, attention to detail, an analytical mind, and an appreciation for the bigger picture, are skills that I have had to utilise just as much, if not more, in the legal sphere.

What advice would you give to someone looking to switch careers?

Don’t be afraid to take a risk to pursue your dreams. Whether it’s going back to education later in life or taking a ‘step back’ in your career to move closer to where you want to be. Also, talk to people! Most people are very receptive to questions and are happy to provide helpful advice and insights into what they do, to give you an idea of whether the industry really is for you or not.
