Tell us about your career journey to date
I had a varied route into law, which started when I joined the Royal Marines after finishing school. I then spent a few years travelling around the Indian Ocean working in the maritime security sector before joining the London Fire Brigade and studying law with the Open University part time.
My work in the shipping industry grew my interest in the world of business, seeing first-hand how entwined the movement of goods, finance and legal sectors were in relation to the world's economies.
Which transferable skills have you gained that will enhance your ability to thrive in your legal career?
I have always prided myself on my ability to remain calm under pressure and I think this is a valuable skill to have when deadlines are approaching, or clients need reassuring. This is a skill you need to constantly monitor and work on even though the work may no longer be a literal life or death situation!
Another skill I was maybe more surprised to rely on as much as I do is teamwork. As a commercial lawyer you will constantly be working as part of a team, but you will also need to work with other lawyers and clients to achieve your goals.
What advice would you give to someone looking to switch careers?
Since beginning my career in commercial law, I have always struggled with imposter syndrome, and I still do. This is something that is well recognised throughout the industry and speaking to colleagues and using the available support networks really does help.
My advice would be to look to utilise your networks to make connections as someone somewhere will know somebody who will be willing to sit down and provide advice or answer questions. Spend time researching the type of work you may be interested in and ensure you are aware of the skills you already have that can benefit you and those you will be working with.
