Tell us about your career journey to date
My career began in HR and recruitment, where I spent a decade honing my skills in talent planning and relationship management. I specialised in identifying and adapting to socio-political shifts, which piqued my interest in the broader commercial landscape. This, combined with my involvement in legal recruitment, sparked a passion for law.
What are the transferable skills you’ve developed that complement a career in law?
In both HR and commercial law, social and emotional intelligence are crucial. My experience in recruitment taught me to communicate effectively, empathise, and build trust—skills essential for client relations in law. My commercial awareness, developed through talent planning, enables me to anticipate business needs and advise accordingly, a skill directly transferable to commercial law practice. Additionally, my experience in managing confidential information with integrity and resilience under pressure will support my success in navigating the complexities of legal cases.
What advice would you give to someone looking to switch careers?
Switching careers requires a clear understanding of how your current skills apply to your new field. Identify transferable skills and experiences that can give you an edge in the new career. It's also essential to stay informed about industry trends and to seek out opportunities for further learning or qualifications. Finally, be patient and persistent—career transitions take time, but with dedication, they can lead to fulfilling new opportunities.
