Job Description

The role

In this role, you will support the Global Client & Market Development group and lawyers across the Clifford Chance (CC) network, through the delivery of business insights for the purpose of business development, client focus and marketing initiatives.
 

Who you will work with

As part of the CIBI team, you will work with local and international colleagues and stakeholders across the Clifford Chance network.
 

What you will be responsible for

You will be responsible for delivering business insights on specific business development opportunities and initiatives, by conducting research on existing and prospective clients, competitors and sector/market/product opportunities, client development planning, and providing research-based strategic insights to partners on winning new business and developing existing clients. The opportunities are typically multi-jurisdictional meaning close collaboration is necessary with offices throughout the network.

The role will also require the successful candidate to organise and co-ordinate with global teams, supporting client opportunities, as well as business planning and reporting.
 

What you will do

Practice Area Support: As a Research Expert, you will be expected to provide research support and intelligence within Clifford Chance:

  • Support to lawyers: You will be working closely with senior members of the BD Corporate practice operating from various Clifford Chance offices, to enable them to offer optimal problem-solving approaches to their clients.
  • Comprehensive Research: You will gather the necessary raw information and will be required to organize, analyse, and synthesize the findings into targeted, firm-formatted end products that have a clear, structured storyline (when appropriate), demonstrating the “so-what” and implications of the information through text and data-driven charts and conceptual frameworks. These end products may be in the form of client-ready fact packs, primers and advanced spreadsheets, utilizing financial concepts, ratios and calculations.

Business/Knowledge Development: You are expected to possess and build on an extensive knowledge base, develop forward-looking insights, by utilizing a wide range of internal and external sources. To help build your expertise, you may be expected to:

  • Practice Documents: Produce fact packs, teasers and detailed company profiles, sector/industry research packs, M&A deals screening and analysis, competitors' intelligence, knowledge documents, proposals, thematic reports, as well as participate in knowledge capture and project debriefs.
  • Practice Knowledge: You will play the role of a coordinator of the practice knowledge, by proactively developing and maintaining knowledge documents for internal and external use.
     

Qualifications

Your experience

Candidates for this role will be entrepreneurial self-starters who enjoy the challenges and rewards of research work in a dynamic and changing environment. They will likely possess:

  • A bachelor's degree from a reputed institute. Master's degree will be preferred.
  • At least 5-7 years of overall cross-cultural research experience, preferably working with senior management and key stakeholders in a consulting environment, with demonstrated involvement in discrete research projects in area of expertise.

Sector focus and experience on Energy & Resources or Infrastructure sectors will be preferred.

Other experience and competencies include:

  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills, including appropriate style, confidence, and structure; effective listening skills
  • Analytical Thought and Problem Solving - The ability to gather and analyse information and to use the results of that analysis to make effective decisions and find innovative solutions to problems
  • Service orientation: Excellent customer focus, including proactive responses to practice-area needs with thoughtfulness, commitment, and diligence 
  • Industry/functional knowledge: In-depth understanding of the landscape in area of expertise (mergers & acquisitions, private equity investments, market dynamics, issues, regulations, and development of forward-looking insights, etc.). Knowledge of building SWOT, PESTLE and Porter's 5 Forces
  • Source knowledge: Extensive source knowledge in area of expertise; excellent understanding of source quality and creative data proxies
  • Request scoping/problem solving: Excellent investigative, collaborative, problem-solving approaches; ability to advise teams on objectives and project issues; ability to scope complex projects, individually
  • Numerical/financial skills: Excellent comprehension and use of complex economic, financial, and business terms and advanced financial concepts and ratios
  • Relationship building/networking: Development of strong, mutually beneficial relationships with colleagues and clients and proactive utilization of expertise within and outside the firm
  • Research output: Structured client-ready packs, with concrete storylines, using conceptual frameworks; qualitative interpretation and presentation of facts, on topics of interest
  • Knowledge Output: Contribution to knowledge-building activities of the unit/practice and leading participation in knowledge capture (when required)
  • Commitment and Self-motivation – Commitment to both Clifford Chance and its clients, demonstrated in the drive to improve both quality of delivery and personal performance 
  • Team skills: Collaborative and Cooperative attitude towards work and colleagues
  • Creativity: Suggests out-of-the-box solutions to complex problems
  • Time management: Reliable, dependable, and able to manage workload effectively
  • Database Knowledge: CapitalIQ, Mergermarket, LSEG, Pitchbook, Bloomberg, and Global Data among others
  • IT Proficiency: Excellent MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Projects)
  • Ethics: Maintains confidentiality and compliance of company policies at all times
