SPARK

What is SPARK?

Clifford Chance SPARK is more than just work experience. It's a long-term investment in your future. Our award-winning early careers programme is designed for exceptional students in the early stages of their undergraduate degree, offering a unique opportunity to explore a career in commercial law and the potential to secure a Training Contract.

Delivered over nine months and across two academic years, SPARK combines in-person work experience with virtual learning. Through a blend of classroom-based learning, skills development, work shadowing and commercial awareness training, you'll gain valuable insight into the work of a global law firm, develop key professional skills and experience our culture first-hand.

Elements of the programme are paid at £110 per day, and successful participants will be invited to interview for a Clifford Chance Training Contract at the end of the programme.

If you secure a Training Contract, our investment in your development continues. Learn more about the training, support and career development opportunities available to our trainee solicitors.

The structure of the SPARK programme

Heading

Your SPARK journey begins with an offer reception at our London office, giving you the opportunity to celebrate your place on the programme and learn more about what lies ahead.

You'll hear from future trainee solicitors who completed SPARK before securing their Clifford Chance Training Contracts, while beginning to build your professional network with lawyers from across the firm.

We'll also introduce you to the online platform used by your SPARK cohort, where you can stay connected with fellow participants and representatives from the firm throughout the programme.

From day one, you'll have opportunities to develop meaningful connections, gain insight into life at Clifford Chance and explore a career in commercial law through the experiences of trainees and lawyers across our international network.

As a SPARK participant, you'll become part of a dedicated Clifford Chance Buddy Bubble, your own support network within the firm.

Unlike traditional buddy programmes that connect you with a single individual, our Buddy Bubble model brings together fellow SPARK participants, future trainees, current trainee solicitors and associates. This unique network provides access to a range of perspectives, experiences and insights, helping you build meaningful connections from day one.

You'll have regular opportunities to connect with your Buddy Bubble both in person and virtually, giving you access to a supportive community of peers and mentors throughout the programme. It's an excellent way to expand your professional network, learn more about life at Clifford Chance and gain valuable insight into a career in commercial law.

Over three days at our London office, you'll take part in an immersive learning experience designed to help you develop the skills needed for a successful career in commercial law. Through presentations, case study workshops and interactive seminars, you'll explore our global product groups while building your legal knowledge, commercial awareness, client focus and professional brand.

The programme is fast-paced, engaging and collaborative, offering the opportunity to learn from colleagues across the firm and gain valuable insight into life at Clifford Chance. You'll also have the chance to build your professional network by connecting with trainees, associates, partners and members of our Early Talent team.

Participants will receive £110 per day for attending the programme.

We're committed to helping you develop the skills needed to succeed as a future trainee solicitor and build a successful career at Clifford Chance.

Through two days of dedicated training delivered by an external expert, you'll gain a deeper understanding of what it takes to be a high-performing commercial lawyer. Each interactive session includes team-based simulations designed to strengthen your professional skills, commercial awareness and business acumen.

The training is designed to prepare you for your SPARK Shadowing Week, helping you apply your learning in a practical setting and gain greater confidence before your work experience placement.

This part of the programme is also paid at £110 per day.

This is where you'll put everything you've learned into practice. During this stage of the programme, you'll spend a week shadowing one of our lawyers in a core area of the business, gaining first-hand experience of the work carried out at a leading international law firm.

Supported by a dedicated supervisor and buddy, you'll work on real tasks and gain valuable insight into life as a trainee solicitor, while developing practical skills and commercial awareness.

As part of this paid work experience opportunity, you'll receive £550 for the week.

Throughout the nine-month programme, you'll be invited to a range of exclusive virtual and in-person events designed to help you build connections, develop your network and become part of the Clifford Chance community.

These events offer valuable insights into life at the firm, giving you the opportunity to connect with fellow SPARK participants, future trainees and colleagues from across the business. Through these interactions, you'll gain a deeper understanding of our culture, people and the opportunities available within a career at Clifford Chance.

Available exclusively to SPARK interns, future trainees and Clifford Chance employees, these events provide a unique opportunity to build meaningful relationships and strengthen your connection with the firm ahead of your next career step.

As part of the SPARK programme, you'll have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact through community outreach and pro bono initiatives developed specifically for your SPARK cohort. These experiences provide valuable insight into how legal skills can be used to support communities and create positive change.

You'll also gain a deeper understanding of Clifford Chance's global outreach work and our commitment to delivering positive and sustainable impact in the communities where we operate. Through these initiatives, you'll see how social impact, responsible business and client work come together across our global network.

SPARK gave me a first-hand perspective on Clifford Chance and the realities of being a lawyer at the firm. Through practice area presentations and skills training, I developed my legal knowledge and commercial awareness. Networking with trainees, associates, and partners also offered a valuable insight into the firm’s collaborative environment and what a career at Clifford Chance could look like.

SPARK was an excellent foundation for understanding the inner workings of a multi-service international law firm. I was able to ask Partners candid questions and see the incredible work Clifford Chance does within and beyond the law. The programme connected me with an inspiring cohort of people from a wide range of backgrounds, who I feel grateful to call friends and future colleagues as I embark on the PGDL.

As a non-law student, I found SPARK balanced insights into the firm’s work through engaging, yet accessible presentations with opportunities to improve key skills in practical workshops. Through various networking sessions, I made lasting connections with other interns, business professionals, and lawyers, from trainees to partners. My SPARK Buddy was especially valuable; she provided consistent guidance and gave me a unique perspective on her day-to-day life at Clifford Chance.
