The structure of the Training Contract
PGDL and LLM Legal Practice (SQE 1 & 2)
We’re proud to partner with the University of Law to deliver our PGDL conversion course for non-law graduates, alongside our bespoke, innovative, and dynamic SQE programme for all future trainees.
Our SQE course is designed not only to prepare you thoroughly for the academic demands of the SQE, but also to equip you with the core skills and technical excellence needed to thrive as a lawyer at Clifford Chance.
All future trainees are required to complete the SQE, even if they have previously passed the LPC.
To progress, future trainees must:
- Successfully complete each individual PGDL module on the first attempt.
- Achieve a commendation (minimum average score of 60%) across the PGDL.
- Pass SQE 1, SQE 2, and each module of the Clifford Chance SQE Plus on the first attempt.
Induction
Our award-winning Trainee Induction Programme is a key part of helping you start your journey as a trainee with the skills you need to succeed. This three-day programme has been designed with input from key stakeholders in the firm from Senior Partners through to current trainees who have been through the learning process themselves.
The Induction combines practical learning with skill development in a safe and supportive environment. You’ll gain a clear understanding of how your role as a trainee fits into the London office and contributes to the wider Clifford Chance strategy — all before you begin your first seat.
Career Development Meetings and Qualification
Throughout your Training Contract you’ll benefit from structured meetings with your supervisors, monitoring partners, and the Early Talent Development Team to ensure you stay on track and receive the support you need.
You’ll also be guided by a dedicated Early Talent Development Specialist assigned to your cohort. They’ll meet with you at key points during your SQE journey to discuss your career aspirations, answer any questions, and make sure the appropriate support is in place from day one.
We understand that the qualification process can feel daunting. That’s why we start these conversations early — so you can begin shaping your future from the very start of your Training Contract.
Seat Allocation
During your two-year Training Contract, you’ll gain hands-on experience across a variety of practice areas and teams. Our points-based seat allocation system gives you the flexibility to shape your Training Contract around the areas and specialisms that interest you most.
You’ll be allocated 200 points at the start of your Training Contract to use as you wish. Before each seat, you’ll submit your preferences through our seat algorithm, which is designed to be transparent, fair, and empowering — putting you in control of your career direction.
From Asset Finance to Corporate Antitrust, Tax to Private Equity, or even one of our many international or client secondments, the choice is yours.
Resilience Training & Support
As part of our commitment to employee wellbeing, we’ve developed a unique, award-winning resilience programme tailored specifically for Clifford Chance trainees.
We recognise that life has its ups and downs, and that’s why we offer a wide range of support, whether through colleagues or services provided by the firm. Many of these services take a holistic approach to mental health and wellbeing, ensuring you’re supported both personally and professionally.
This support is further strengthened by our trainee inclusion and mental health champions, peers selected by their cohort to help foster a culture of openness, inclusion, and care.
Partner Sponsorship
We understand the value of building strong professional networks and the impact of having mentors who are invested in your development. At Clifford Chance, our associates and partners are committed to providing you with exceptional learning opportunities and exposure to high-quality work.
Throughout your Training Contract, you’ll be supported by a dedicated supervisor in each seat. In addition, you’ll be matched with a Partner Sponsor who will guide you throughout the full two years, acting as a mentor, advisor, and sounding board to help you navigate the exciting opportunities a career at Clifford Chance can offer.
Client & International Secondments
Over a quarter of our trainees are on secondment at any given time — a reflection of our global outlook and commitment to developing internationally minded lawyers. Thriving in a law firm like Clifford Chance means embracing this mindset, and international secondments offer a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in different cultures, work closely with global strategic clients, and gain a deeper understanding of how they operate.
Relocating abroad is a significant step, but you’ll be guided and supported throughout the process. We’ll ensure the process is smooth from start to finish, with plenty of support along the way. Before you go, we’ll offer language lessons if needed, and our London Early Talent Development team will stay in regular contact to help you make the most of your experience.
Training and Support
At the start of each seat, you’ll gain access to the Clifford Chance Global Academy — a pioneering learning platform offering in-depth training tailored to your practice area. The Academy is designed to help you build outstanding legal, business, and commercial skills that will serve you throughout your career. This technical training is delivered by expert trainers, with a strong business focus and content customised specifically for Clifford Chance.
In addition, our global Tech Academy provides online training, resources, and a programme of in-person workshops around the world. These initiatives ensure you stay ahead of emerging technology trends and are equipped to address the evolving challenges our clients face.

LIFT
One of the ways we invest in our future lawyers is through our award-winning LIFT programme — the first internship initiative of its kind. We’ve partnered with key Clifford Chance business teams and a select group of external organisations to offer paid summer internships exclusively to our future trainees, with the sole aim of supporting your professional development before you even join the firm.
We recognise that being a great lawyer requires more than legal knowledge. It’s about understanding the industry, how businesses operate, and how to deliver exceptional client service. The best way to build this understanding is through hands-on experience, where you’ll develop valuable business skills that will help you thrive as a trainee.
The LIFT experience
Dillon Thompson
Intern
Tax, Pensions & Employment Team
"I have had the opportunity to work with my supervisor, as well as partners across TPE (Tax, Pensions and Employment) globally, on business development initiatives. Tasks have been as varied as completing submissions to legal ranking directories and conducting analyses of partners' involvement in the Relationship Teams for our largest clients. I have developed skills, connections, and knowledge of the firm's global operations. All of this will assist me throughout my Training Contract and beyond."
Amelia Little
Intern
Energy and Infrastructure Business Development Team
"I applied for a LIFT internship in this team to learn more about a practice I’m interested in as a future trainee. As a non-law student, completing a LIFT internship gave me insight into the firm’s commercial priorities and how client relationships are. Was also a great chance to meet the Energy & Infrastructure team, to learn about their work, and support them on pitches and research tasks."
Isobel Lovatt
Intern
Financial Institutions Group and Antitrust Team
"Having applied to Clifford Chance through the direct Training Contract route, LIFT presented an invaluable opportunity to spend time at the firm, build a network and further my understanding of the firm as a commercial entity and its strategic goals. The program did not disappoint; working across two corporate teams: FIG (Financial Institutions Group) and Antitrust, gave me an invaluable insight into the work and strategic priorities of both practice areas. "
Oliver Lawrence
Intern Supervisor
Client & Market Development Executive Manager at Clifford Chance
"We have found interns are far more confident trainees and business developers, having been on the LIFT programme. They have a better understanding of the wider firm and the Business Development resources available to them."
Stephanie Fletcher
Intern Supervisor
Head of Sectors & Themes (Global Client Development) at Clifford Chance
"This experience provides invaluable insights into how we support our clients, sectors, and practice areas. Each intern brings a unique set of skills that we wholeheartedly embrace and nurture during their time with us. This mutual learning experience not only enriches our work but also helps forge lasting connections as our trainees embark on their professional journeys."
A buddy programme like no other
Unlike typical buddy programmes where you’re connected with just one person, we’ve created ‘Buddy Bubbles’, a unique system where you’ll join your own group of SPARK interns, Future Trainees, Current Trainees, and Associates. This diverse mix gives you an instant network of peers and mentors, offering a range of perspectives and insights from day one.
You’ll have regular opportunities to connect with your Buddy Bubble — both in person and virtually — so there’s always someone to turn to, whatever the question. It’s a great way to build community and gain a well-rounded view of life at Clifford Chance.
