Job Description

This is a 12 month maternity cover position, ideally starting end of August / beginning of September.

The role

Clifford Chance has an ambitious global strategy which puts clients at the very heart of everything the Firm does. We have a clear mandate around developing our existing strengths and relationships whilst increasing our market share in new markets. Our Client & Market Development function ("C&MD") is pivotal in making the Firm strategy a reality.

In this role, you will be part of the C&MD team supporting Clifford Chance's International Arbitration group. This is a hands-on and proactive role where you will work directly with the Head of the Global International Arbitration group based in Paris, and his leadership team based in Asia Pacific, the UK, Continental Europe and the US.

The International Arbitration group, part of the firm's Global Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice, sit in offices across all the major arbitration centres and throughout our global network – including the UK, Europe, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and the Americas – and work together as one cross-border team.

The team regularly acts for clients in investment protection arbitration, joint venture and M&A disputes as well as commercial dispute arbitrations in the energy, construction, infrastructure, pharmaceutical, aerospace & defence, banking & finance, insurance & reinsurance, shipping & transport and telecommunications sectors.

In addition to responsibility for International Arbitration, you will also have responsibility for both our Public International Law and International Trade lawyers – many of whom are part of our International Arbitration group.

 

Who you will work with

You will work directly with our International Arbitration group, of approximately 30 Partners and 130 lawyers, on their client and market development initiatives.

As part of the L&DR C&MD team, you will work closely with the Global and Regional L&DR C&MD leads, as well as other members of the L&DR C&MD team located across the globe.

You will also interact with members of the wider Global C&MD team; the Brand, Communications and Marketing ("BC&M") team; the Knowledge & Thought Leadership ("KETL") team; and the Innovation & Best Delivery ("I&BD") team.

 

What you will be responsible for

Revenue generation

  • Support the International Arbitration group in implementing its C&MD plan and strategy.
  • Work with the International Arbitration group and its individual partners to develop/shape products and initiatives.
  • Position and promote International Arbitration products and initiatives with L&DR Regional C&MD leads and peers from the wider C&MD team.
  • Proactively spot market trends and opportunities for International Arbitration across the globe.
  • Provide tailored input into significant Arbitration-related pitches and capability statements.

Reputation management and marketing communications (working with BC&M)

  • Assist in identifying opportunities to position and raise the profile of the International Arbitration group and its individual lawyers.
  • Lead in the organisation of Arbitration-related client events, seminars and conferences, sponsorships, PR, etc.
  • Oversee multiple marketing communications projects, including the delivery of global directory/awards submissions.
  • Lead the relationship with account managers of the most significant external publications.
  • Support in the creation and distribution of thought leadership material

Client focus

  • Apply depth of Arbitration product knowledge to support client and segment (Banks, Financial Investors, Corporates) programmes that run across the L&DR practice and firmwide.
  • Conduct competitor, client and marketplace analysis to identify new and emerging opportunities.

Line management

  • Responsible for the line management of two individuals within the Global L&DR C&MD team.

C&MD function projects

  • Working closely with the Global Head of L&DR, C&MD to execute on strategically important C&MD function projects.

 

What you will do

This is a strategic role requiring a high-energy individual to lead on the development of International Arbitration products and successful delivery of International Arbitration initiatives.

You will be responsible for the execution of targeted client development activity, across the International Arbitration group.


Qualifications

Your experience

In order to perform this role successfully, the candidate will require:

  • Significant experience as a manager in professional services business development (preferably in a law firm).
  • A strong interest in and understanding of the work types covered by the International Arbitration group in the various offices.
  • Sound commercial awareness of legal market development, particularly in relation to work types covered by the International Arbitration group.
  • The ability to develop advisory relationships with partners.
  • Previous leadership responsibility.
  • Strong project management and organisational skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and with lawyers of all seniority levels.
  • Coaching, influencing and presentation skills.
  • Commitment to quality and attention to detail.
  • A degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.

As your line manager, she will meet with you regularly to discuss both your professional and personal development objectives, supporting you in identifying the right opportunities. You will also be able to access a full suite of training via Clifford Chance's Academy portal.
