The role
The Firm operates through committees to steer the Firm's decision making to align with our global strategy. The Clients, Markets and Products Committee is designed to focus on "One Firm" client centric growth which is co-led by the Global Clients, Markets and Products ("CMP") Partner and Chief Client Officer ("CCO"). The stated aim is to create a "clients first" culture and ensure we collaborate around our clients to deliver the highest quality legal services from practice area, product and sector specialists. To achieve this, it is critical we deploy our resources, data, partner insight and client listening to ensure we continually improve and refine our client offering. The Global Operations and Business Transformation Committee focuses on the Firm's operational strategy to ensure it is closely aligned to the client strategy and is designed to further improve the efficiency and cost effectiveness of our operations.
Our Client & Market Development ("CMD") and Brand, Communications & Marketing ("BCM") functions are pivotal in making the Firm's vision a reality.
The Client and Market Development Senior Manager will proactively lead development and implementation of the business strategy of global Africa group, working closely with partners, as well as with the global CMD and BCM functions and other functions as required. The Senior Client and Market Development Manager will report to the Co-Heads of the Africa Group and the Director of Business Development & Strategic Marketing, Continental Europe.
What you will be responsible for
The purpose of this role is to:
- Develop and implement the Africa Group's strategy, working with the Africa leadership team to ensure consistency with the global Firm's strategy. You will work in close collaboration with partners, associates and CMD colleagues to put this into action.
- Drive Africa revenue growth from creating cross-selling opportunities, focusing on priority products and sectors work and the client base, driving key initiatives and client relationships.
- Work with the Global CMD team to realise synergies from our global client base and global strategy.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy and Implementation
- Develop a strategy for the Africa Group aligned with the Firm's strategy, including priority client targeting and initiatives and campaigns to support high-growth products and clients.
- Work closely with the Co-Heads of Africa Group, the Chief Client Officer, relevant partners, associates and CMD/BCM professionals across all practice areas to implement the Africa Group's action plan.
- Ensure cross practice, cross-sector and cross-functional alignment, to achieve proper coverage and effective strategy execution.
- Facilitate and coordinate interactions between the various groups to ensure optimal communications and drive efficiency.
- Report regularly on progress against the plan and refine approach accordingly.
Client and Market Development
- Deliver, support and co-ordinate high impact business development campaigns and Africa-focused initiatives including on the ground initiatives. Provide wider support to global initiatives.
- Collaborate with client managers and local BD teams to integrate the appropriate Africa client strategy into their plans.
- Formulate and execute strategic cross-collaborative initiatives to leverage our geographic, practice, and client reach, aiming to build market presence, offer relevant services, and generate revenue.
- Work collaboratively with the Casablanca based CMDs and other regional and global CMD, BCM, PSL and KETL teams to ensure Africa Group's priorities are integrated in business plans, marketing, PR and thought leadership campaigns.
- Ensure the right client strategy is incorporated into business plans, including identifying key clients (GSCs, major African clients, other international clients) for Africa work.
- Identify cross-selling opportunities and develop synergies with the global network and assist the global network with the preparation of panel proposals and RFPs.
- Lead the development and maintenance of key messages and client-facing collateral, including capability statements and support other colleagues across the network for input on Africa-related pitches and other documents demonstrating our capabilities.
- Conduct competitor, client and marketplace analysis.
- Overall responsibility for Africa-related directory submissions and nominations for awards.
Communications
- Support the internal profile raising of the Africa Group through building and maintaining excellent relationships with the global network. Share best practice and wins with this group, and across the global network.
- Coordinate with the global BCM function to maximise media opportunities and publicity for the Africa Group.
- Develop content for social media in coordination with the global communications team.
Management
Supervise the Africa Business Development Manager.
Your experience
Key required skills include:
- Ideally familiar with the African market, and the opportunities and challenges it presents for our business
- Understanding of our clients' commercial objectives and marketplace
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail

- Demonstrating strong teamwork capacity and ability to collaborate with colleagues at all levels and across global offices

Experience
- Significant experience in a similar position in a professional or financial services firm, preferably international/matrix organisation with management exposure and preferably with exposure to the African market.
- Familiar with business development and strategy, key account management, marketing and communications including PR background.
- Very good knowledge of Office programmes (PowerPoint, Word, Excel) and the use of social media.
Language skills
Excellent command of the English language with strong writing skills. Preferably (but not essentially) proficient in French.
