Tell us about your career journey to date
Prior to joining Clifford Chance, I worked in the Civil Service. I joined in 2016 on the Commercial Fast Stream and then moved to the Cabinet Office Complex Transactions Team where I worked on several high-profile projects including EU Exit and Test & Trace. The Civil Service was a brilliant place to work and built my experience working in complex and high-pressure environments. I particularly loved the legal discussions surrounding commercial negotiations and decided I would like to retrain as a lawyer to expand my understanding and interest in commercial but from a different perspective.
Which transferable skills have you gained that will enhance your ability to thrive in your legal career?
My prior role allowed me to work directly with lawyers and with contracts, supporting my understanding of commercial and wider drivers. More generally, skills such as collaboration, communication, research, and time management have been very helpful when making the switch. Working out a new working environment did take a little time, but knowing I had done it before really helped.
What advice would you give to someone looking to switch careers?
There is no such thing as 'too late'. Don't underestimate the value you could bring, even if your prior role was not in the area you are looking to move into. Your previous experience is invaluable - not only the practical elements but also the skills and confidence you will have built.
